Preparing to Install - Finding the Joists Under Your Squeaky Floor Start by isolating the squeaky areas. Use blue painter's tape to mark the spots where you hear the squeaks. Once youve identified the problem areas, locate the floor joists and determine their direction. Joists usually run parallel to the shorter side of the house, and they are typically spaced about 16 inches apart. When you find one joist, the next one will be parallel and located 16 inches away. How to Use on Carpet Position the tripod fixture over the joist and press the alignment and depth control fixture firmly into the carpet. Apply pressure around the fixture and drive the screw down until it reaches the limit set by the fixture. Once the screw is in place, use the screw gripper to rock it left to right to snap off the top 1-inch of the screws shank. The screw will break at the weak point just below the floor's surface for a clean, invisible finish. How to Use on Hardwood, Vinyl, or Linoleum Floors For hardwood floors, pre-drill each screw hole with an 1/8th-inch drill bit to prevent the wood from cracking. Drive the counter-snap screws through the hardwood fixture, which is included in the repair kit. Youll hear a snap when the screw head hits the top of the fixture. Under pressure, the screw will snap at the score line, 1/4 inch below the surface.
