Selbsttäuschung ist ein problematisches, weil zutiefst irrationales Phänomen. Bisherige philosophische Auseinandersetzungen damit scheitern allerdings daran, dieses Phänomen als ein „Versagen der Vernunft“ verständlich zu machen. Daher argumentiert die Autorin dafür, Selbsttäuschung als ein privatives, d.h. ein von einer immanenten Norm abweichendes, und zugleich als ein ethisches Phänomen zu begreifen.
Dass Selbsttäuschung zu einer Versuchungwird, erklärt sich diesem metaphysischen Ansatz zufolge aus der allgemeinen menschlichen Natur. Wenn wir erkennen, dass wir unserer Vorstellung von einem guten Leben nicht gerecht werden können, weil unser Leben als solches oder unsere soziale Existenz bedroht ist, wird Selbsttäuschung zu einer Möglichkeit, diesem Bedrohungsgefühl zu entkommen. Dass manche Personen der Versuchung zur Selbsttäuschung dann auch tatsächlich erliegen, geht auf einen spezifischen Mangel dieser Personen zurück. Es fehlt ihnen an der Tugend der accuracy (Bernard Williams), d.h. an der Fähigkeit, sorgfältig und gewissenhaft mit Informationen umzugehen. Wer sich selbst täuscht, vermeidet es bewusst, aus dem, was er weiß, das zu erschließen, was er erschließen könnte. Selbsttäuschung ist eine motivierte epistemische Inkonsequenz.
