Sega Genesis/Mega Drive non oem reproduction Outrun video game cartridge.
Released in 1991, OutRun for the Sega Genesis is a faithful port of the iconic 1986 arcade racing classic designed by Yu Suzuki. Unlike traditional racers, it focuses on the "driving" experience—tasking you with piloting a red convertible (based on the Ferrari Testarossa) across a sun-drenched, cross-country trek against a strict timer rather than other competitors.
Key Gameplay Features
· Nonlinear Branching Paths: The game is famous for its fork-in-the-road system. Just before each checkpoint, you choose to steer left or right, leading to 15 different stages and five distinct final destinations.
· Checkpoint Racing: Your primary goal is to reach the end of each stage before time runs out. Reaching a checkpoint grants a time extension to keep the journey going.
· Manual Gear Shifting: The driving mechanics involve a simple but essential two-speed gearbox (Low and High). Mastering when to downshift for sharp turns is key to avoiding crashes that can send your car and passengers flying.
· Iconic Radio Selection: Before starting your race, you can use the in-game car radio to select one of three legendary synth-driven tracks: "Magical Sound Shower," "Passing Breeze," or "Splash Wave".
· While the Sega Genesis hardware was less powerful than the arcade's "Super Scaler" boards, this version is widely considered a "faithful port" that captures the original spirit, including all routes and the core sense of speed. Notable tweaks in the Genesis version include a slight car redesign to reduce the resemblance to the Ferrari Testarossa for licensing reasons (e.g., the horse emblem was changed to an eagle).
