THE MATER ECCLESIAE MOSAIC IN ST. PETERS SQUARE:These delightful rosary beads are dedicated to Mary Mater Ecclesiae (Mother of the Church ), as depicted in the mosaic installed in St Peters square in December 1981. This mosaic is a sign of St. John Paul IIs great affection for the Blessed Mother. The story begins in May 1981, some months before the installation of the Mosaic in the square. On 13th May, the Holy Father was shot in the abdomen and collapsed during one of his numerous papal audiences in the square. He underwent critical surgery and, after 22 days in the Gemelli Hospital, returned to the Vatican alive and well! He attributed his miraculous healing to the Virgin of Fatima. On that very same date, 13th May, 64 years earlier, Our Lady had appeared to the three shepherd children in Fatima. The assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II took place on the anniversary of the Marian apparition. The Holy Fathers life was spared thanks to the Virgin Mary. As a sign of gratitude, he had an image of the Blessed Mother placed in St. Peters Square.
